Basic Earnings per Share

Basic Earnings per Share (EPS) is a financial metric used to calculate the amount of net income earned by a company per share of common stock outstanding. To calculate Basic EPS, the company's net income is divided by the total number of shares of common stock outstanding. The Basic EPS formula is as follows:

Basic EPS = (Net Income - Preferred Dividends) / Average Number of Common Shares Outstanding

Basic EPS provides investors with a measure of a company's profitability on a per-share basis, allowing them to compare the earnings of different companies irrespective of their size.
